About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center is soliciting applications for the LAUNCHing Leaders for Future U.S. Investments in Global Health Research (D43 Clinical Trial Optional) program to fund mentored research training for early-career researchers, with a forecast posting date of September 22, 2025. Applicants must form consortia consisting of at least four U.S. research institutions and at least six collaborating research-intensive institutions and/or sites in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private) and other entity types including universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, Federal institutions, and domestic and foreign non-profit and for-profit organizations. The program funds one-year mentored research training programs for pre- and post-doctoral trainees with thematic focus on biomedical or behavioral science relevant to participating NIH institutes, centers, and offices. Programs will provide research mentorship, technical and professional skills training, research partnerships with matched LMIC peers, career guidance, and networking opportunities designed to develop trainees into independent researchers capable of addressing health needs in the U.S. and globally.
Scientific and technical merit evaluation assesses study significance and objectives, experimental design and approach adequacy, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity in relation to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives. Applications undergo initial review by a CSR-assembled review group, followed by Fogarty International Center Advisory Board review, with funding decisions made by FIC program officers and executive leadership. The assistance listing is CFDA 93.989 (International Research and Research Training). NIH employs a standard review timeline from six to nine months. Non-competing renewal applications are permitted for multi-year awards.
Forecast synopsis
The LAUNCH program supports the training of future global health researchers by providing early career researchers in the U.S. an opportunity for immersion in the wide-ranging health conditions and challenges experienced in international low-resource settings and to partner with local health researchers. Consortia consisting of four U.S. research institutions and at least six collaborating research intensive institutions and/or sites in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) will develop one-year mentored research training programs for pre- and post-doctoral trainees that focus thematically on areas of biomedical or behavioral science relevant to the research priorities of the participating NIH institutes, centers and offices. These programs will provide research mentorship, rigorous technical and professional skills training, research partnerships with matched LMIC peers, career guidance, networking opportunities, and a collaborative research training environment to support the trainees' potential to develop into independent researchers. By leveraging the unique scientific contexts of LMICs and existing NIH research grants led by program mentors, LAUNCH enhances the potential of future research by trainees to address health needs in the U.S. and globally.
