About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities Division of Lifelong Learning is accepting applications for the Landmarks of American History and Culture and Summer Institutes program by December 9, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with approximately $7 million distributed to an estimated 17 recipients and award amounts ranging from $300,000 to $460,000 depending on project duration.

Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited institutions of higher education (public or nonprofit), state and local governments and their agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. No cost sharing or matching funds are required; NEH provides outright funds.

Projects must be residential, immersive programs convening 25–36 participants per session over one to three weeks, conducted in two consecutive summers (2028 and 2029) with different cohorts each year. Institutes may address any humanities topic; Landmarks projects must incorporate place-based approaches within sites of historic and cultural significance. Participant stipends are mandatory and non-reducible: $1,600 for one week, $2,500 for two weeks, and $3,200 for three weeks. The period of performance runs from November 1, 2027, through December 31, 2029.

Project directors must be established humanities scholars; K-12 projects must include a K-12 education specialist. Peer reviewers will evaluate applications on intellectual quality and significance of humanities content, program design and feasibility, and project impact. Restricted activities include promotion of political or religious viewpoints, DEI initiatives, environmental justice initiatives, policy advocacy, pedagogical theory research, creative writing, and unallowable costs such as tuition fees, publication costs, and entertainment facility rentals. Applications require a 10-page narrative, work plan, resumes, letters of commitment, reading list, academic schedule, and supporting attachments submitted through Grants.gov. Award announcements are anticipated for July 2027, though cost incurrence is not authorized until formal award documents issue in November 2027.
