About this opportunity
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is soliciting applications for a Coordinating Center to unite kidney, urologic, and hematologic disease research training and career development programs, with applications due July 1, 2026. This is a single-award cooperative agreement (U24) for a five-year period of performance beginning July 1, 2027.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, county governments, city/township governments, special district governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. Foreign subawards are prohibited.
The anticipated award is approximately $1,535,000 in fiscal year 2027. The application budget must include approximately $800,000 in direct costs annually for core operations and may request $200,000 or more annually for an Opportunity Pool to support trainees. The Program Director/Principal Investigator must maintain minimum 2.4 person-months (20 percent) annual effort and cannot simultaneously serve as PD/PI of an active U2C-TL1 award.
The Coordinating Center, designated KUH-FAMILY, will create a national peer-to-peer network of researchers across career stages, develop a website serving as a national resource for professional development and mentoring, coordinate annual meetings for institutional network and research education programs, administer the Opportunity Pool for trainee support, and establish a Steering Committee including coordinating center leadership, representatives from active institutional training awards, and NIDDK Project Scientists. Applications must address community building strategies, enhanced career development resources, and administrative support structures with emphasis on involving junior investigators and ensuring broad geographic and educational representation.
The funding falls under CFDA 93.847 (Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research). Scientific merit review is anticipated in November 2026 and advisory council review in January 2027.
Synopsis
The Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUH) at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) currently supports several institutional and individual training and career development programs. The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to establish a single Coordinating Center to unite and harmonize these programs, which collectively aim to recruit, train, and retain an active, national community of researchers in KUH mission areas across career stages. This highly integrated community will be called KUH-FAMILY (Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases - Fostering the AdvanceMent of an Interactive Learning communitY).
