About this opportunity

This notice of funding opportunity announces a competitive grant program from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support projects that benefit Indigenous Knowledge holders and Alaska Native community members. NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center Indigenous Engagement Program seeks proposals for projects in three priority areas: supporting existing Indigenous Knowledge networks, elevating Indigenous Knowledge in existing science, and conducting collaborative and co-produced research. Eligible applicants include individuals, institutions of higher education, nonprofits, for-profits, foreign entities, and state/local/tribal governments. Proposals will be evaluated based on importance/relevance to program goals, technical/scientific merit, applicant qualifications, costs, and outreach/education. Proposals are due by April 26, 2024.

Anticipated total funding for the NOAA Indigenous Engagement Program is $1 million over three years, with $500,000 available for FY2024 awards. An additional $250,000 per year may be awarded over fiscal years 2025 through 2026 for multi-year projects. Awards will be made as cooperative agreements for periods up to three years to support work benefiting Indigenous communities in Alaska.

Synopsis

The mission of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) Indigenous Engagement Program (IEP) is to facilitate collaboration with Indigenous Knowledge holders to develop bi-directional and parallel knowledge pathways to support climate-informed fisheries and ecosystem policies regionally and internationally. In addition, the IEP may support consortia that bring together Alaska Native community members to promote environmental monitoring and knowledge sharing workshops. For Fiscal Year 2024, NMFS anticipates that approximately $500,000 could be made available for projects that address Indigenous engagement as identified in the Program Priority Section (I.B.1 - I.B.3). An additional $250,000 in each of FY2025 and FY2026 could be made available as well for multiple year projects.
