About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is soliciting applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program - Organic Transitions, with an application deadline of July 13, 2026. Dollar-for-dollar cost share is required unless a waiver is granted.
Eligible applicants are colleges and universities as defined under 7 U.S.C. 3103, 1994 Institutions, and Hispanic-serving agricultural colleges and universities. Approximately $7.5 million is available to fund approximately 8 awards ranging from $20,000 to $1,000,000, with projects lasting 24–48 months. Indirect costs are capped at 30 percent of total federal funds awarded.
All fieldwork on organic practices must occur on USDA-certified organic land or facilities, though comparisons may include transitional or conventional production for proof of concept. Projects must address at least one of four priority areas: documenting effects of organic practices on soil health and conservation; developing improved technologies and metrics for organic systems; developing alternatives to prohibited substances on the National List; or increasing profitability during organic transitions. All projects require integrated research, education, and extension activities with strong stakeholder involvement, robust evaluation plans, and data management plans.
Applications undergo a two-part review: administrative screening followed by scientific peer review. Evaluation criteria are equally weighted and assess technical merit, relevance to program purpose, budget reasonableness, and likelihood of significant impact on U.S. organic agriculture competitiveness.
The program operates under Assistance Listing 10.303 and Funding Opportunity Number USDA-NIFA-ICGP-011901.
Synopsis
The overall goal of the ORG program, under assistance listing 10.303 is to support the development and implementation of research, extension, and higher education programs that improve the competitiveness of U.S. organic livestock and crop producers, as well as those adopting organic practices.
