About this opportunity

The Department of Education's National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) seeks applicants for Research Training Programs in Special Education (Assistance Listing 84.324B), with applications due October 1, 2026 and an optional letter of intent due September 3, 2026. For fiscal year 2027, NCSER is accepting applications only for the Methods Training program track, which funds training to help current education researchers—including state and local education agency research staff—enhance research and analysis skills in analyzing large administrative datasets to address research questions related to learners with or at risk for disabilities.

Eligible applicants are institutions located in the territorial United States with ability and capacity to conduct training in scientific research methods. Applicants may hold multiple Methods Training awards and submit several applications provided they are substantively different with no overlaps in key personnel.

The Methods Training program provides up to $800,000 over three years. Award period may begin between July 1 and September 1, 2027. Applications must include mentoring and engagement plans, data sharing and management plans, alignment with Standards for Excellence in Education Research (SEER), and research security training certifications and malign foreign talent recruitment program certifications for all senior and key personnel. Methods Training narratives are limited to 15 pages.

The Early Career Development and Mentoring track, providing up to $500,000 over four years to early career researchers at institutions of higher education or non-academic research organizations, is not accepting applications in this fiscal year cycle. Early career faculty at non-R1 institutions may request an additional $200,000 for grant administration costs under that program when it opens.

All applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov; late submissions are not accepted.

Synopsis

NCSER training programs prepare individuals to conduct special education and early intervention research that advances knowledge within the field and addresses issues important to education policymakers and practitioners.

Under this competition, NCSER will consider only applications that address one of the following topics: (1) Early Career Development and Mentoring or (2) Methods Training for Special Education Research. The Early Career program provides support for an integrated research and career development plan for early career investigators at institutions of higher education or non-academic research organizations who have established an interest in special education research and are developing research careers focused on learners with or at risk for disabilities. The Methods Training program funds training to help current education researchers, including state and local education agency research staff, maintain and enhance their research and analysis skills in order to conduct rigorous and relevant research focused on learners with or at risk for disabilities. For FY 2027, NCSER is only accepting applications for Methods Training focused on analyzing large administrative datasets to address research questions related to learners with or at risk for disabilities.
