About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health is soliciting applications for pilot mental health services research not involving clinical trials, with applications due January 7, 2028 under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants). This opportunity (PAR-25-284) supports innovative research consistent with NIMH priorities that does not serve as an immediate precursor to testing a service intervention, addressing mission-relevant services research areas falling outside the experimental therapeutics model required for intervention studies.
Eligible applicants include city, county, state, and tribal governments; public and private higher education institutions; 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits; tribal organizations (both federally recognized and other); for-profit organizations; independent school districts; public or Indian housing authorities; special district governments; small businesses; and other entities. Additional eligible applicants include HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, federal agencies, regional organizations, non-domestic entities, and U.S. territories or possessions.
The Mental Health Research Grants program supports basic and clinical research transforming understanding and treatment of mental illnesses, including neurobiological mechanisms, clinical interventions, implementation science approaches to service delivery, and epidemiological studies. Peer review assesses scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance. All applications are evaluated by scientific peer review panels and, except fellowships, by the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Project periods do not exceed five years. Applications are processed within 180 to 270 days from submission.
Synopsis
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Announcement (NOFO) is to encourage pilot research that is not an immediate precursor to testing a service intervention but is consistent with NIMH priorities for services research. While NIMH now requires use of an experimental therapeutics model for all intervention studies, there is recognition that some mission-relevant areas of services research do not involve clinical trials.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
