About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for innovative mental health services research projects under the R01 mechanism, with applications due January 7, 2028. Clinical trials are not allowed. The program supports non-clinical trial research that informs delivery of high-quality, continuously improving mental health services aligned with NIMH strategic priorities for services research.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, higher education institutions (public and private), tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, small businesses, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, tribal organizations, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, TCCUs, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.
Projects are supported for periods not exceeding five years, with renewal possible as new competing requests. Applications undergo scientific peer review by an appropriate scientific peer review panel and must also be reviewed by the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Funding decisions consider technical merit as determined by peer review, availability of funds, and relevance to program priorities. The program falls under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants).
Applicants must submit using the General Instructions or filtered Research Instructions for FORMS-I. Competitive applications compete on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance. Award review takes 180 to 270 days from submission. Records must be retained for at least three years, or longer if audit findings remain unresolved.
