About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications to develop in vitro and/or ex vivo assays and conduct iterative screening to identify and characterize potential therapeutic agents for neurological or neuromuscular disorders, with applications due October 20, 2027. This R61/R33 mechanism explicitly excludes clinical trials.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), and other entities including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, faith-based and community-based organizations, tribally controlled colleges and universities, non-domestic entities, and regional organizations.

The program aims to advance projects to the point where they meet entry criteria for the Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network or other translational programs. This funding opportunity is assigned to CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) under the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and general significance of proposed study objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design and approach, competency of the investigator or group, adequacy of available and proposed facilities and resources, necessity of budget components relative to the proposed project, and relevance and importance to announced program objectives. Applications requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs in any yearly budget period require prior NINDS agreement to accept submission. The source does not specify award ceiling, award floor, number of expected awards, cost share requirements, or period of performance duration.
