About this opportunity
This funding opportunity from the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) seeks applications for Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding to support the development and scale-up of advanced biofuel technologies. The FOA has two topic areas: 1) Pre-pilot Scale-Up of Integrated Biorefinery Technologies and 2) Biointermediate Processing Toolbox. Eligible applicants include domestic entities such as small businesses, nonprofits, and state/local governments. Projects must utilize allowable feedstocks like agricultural residues or municipal waste to produce transportation fuels, heating oil, or sustainable aviation fuel, while achieving at least 50% greenhouse gas reductions compared to petroleum. Concept papers are due March 22, 2024 and full applications are due June 14, 2024, with selections anticipated by August 23, 2024.
Up to $9.4 million in total federal funding is available through this FOA, which is assigned to the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087). Successful projects will be awarded through cooperative agreements and are expected to scale key process steps from laboratory to pilot scale (TRL 5) within the project period. All work under this FOA must be performed within the United States.

Amendment 000001 - DOE is amending this FOA to extend the Full Application Submission deadline, update the Replies to Reviewer Comments deadline, update the Expected Date for DOE Selection Notifications, and update the Expected Timeframe for Award Negotiations. - Amendment 000001 - DOE is amending this FOA to extend the Full Application Submission deadline, update the Replies to Reviewer Comments deadline, update the Expected Date for DOE Selection Notifications, and update the Expected Timeframe for Award Negotiations. Inflation Reduction Act Funding for Advanced Biofuels Bioenergy Technologies Office's 2024 Systems Development and Integration (SDI) FOA is funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022. IRA Section 60108(b) authorized $10 million to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for new grants to industry in advanced biofuels. EPA and DOE entered an Interagency Agreement to transfer the funds to DOE and allow DOE to manage a FOA with substantial involvement from EPA. The FOA's topic areas are of mutual interest for both the EPA's priority in the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program and DOE BETO's priority in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Grand Challenge as well as SDI's priority in supporting four demonstration-scale integrated biorefineries by 2030. For both topic areas, the application must discuss how the proposed technology would meet the RFS definition of advanced biofuel, which means using allowable feedstocks, producing allowable fuel types, and with lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of at least 50% compared to petroleum base baseline.
