About this opportunity
The Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services Indian Highway Safety Program is soliciting grant applications from federally recognized tribes to fund attendance at the Traffic Records Forum on August 3–5, 2027, with applications due July 24, 2026. This opportunity is restricted to federally recognized tribes that do not currently hold an Indian Highway Safety Grant for FY 2026.
Eligible applicants are federally recognized Native American tribes only. Indian Highway Safety Grants are reimbursable grants covering registration fees and travel expenses for tribal employees engaged in traffic data collection and analysis who attend the conference. Applicants must select employees whose roles align with one or more program objectives: improving accuracy of traffic records and highway safety data, applying performance goals and measures in traffic records system improvements, implementing model traffic records systems, organizing successful traffic records committees, recognizing standards and guidelines for traffic records systems, becoming acquainted with new technologies and ideas, networking with transportation and highway safety professionals, and discovering how better data saves lives. Applicants must justify each attendee's participation by demonstrating how conference attendance will advance the tribe's traffic safety mission and support traffic data collection and analysis efforts. Attendees are responsible for registering themselves and making their own travel reservations; grant funds reimburse documented costs after the event.
This opportunity funds activities under the State and Community Highway Safety program (CFDA 20.600), which provides formula-based grants to states, territories, and federally recognized tribes to implement behavioral highway safety initiatives. The program is administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the federal level and operates as a federal-state partnership framework requiring evidence-based countermeasure strategies aligned with approved highway safety plans and performance-based accountability requirements.
