About this opportunity

The National Institute on Aging is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to invite applications for a national consortium conducting research on clinical effectiveness of primary care interventions for older adults with complex chronic conditions, with applications not currently being solicited and a NOFO publication date unspecified.

Eligible applicants include small businesses, nonprofits, city and county governments, public and Indian housing authorities, special district and tribal governments, for-profit organizations, independent school districts, public and private higher education institutions, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories, and non-domestic entities. The cooperative agreement will support collaborative research to identify and integrate proven primary care interventions (preventive services, chronic care coordination, deprescribing, goal-setting) into interoperable, AI- and machine learning-enhanced platforms with user-centered dashboards. Applicants and partners will validate effectiveness in real-world settings and address implementation barriers across people, processes, and technology.

The funding mechanism is a cooperative agreement using the U24 activity code. The consortium will conduct research evaluating clinical effectiveness impacts of different care approaches on whole-person outcomes and quality metrics to support scaling of EHR interventions. Evaluation will employ standard NIH criteria including scientific merit, technical adequacy of design, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. The National Advisory Council on Aging will conduct secondary peer review.

NIA is providing advance notice to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects prior to NOFO publication.

Forecast synopsis

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to invite applications to create a national consortium of researchers, clinicians, and electronic health record (EHR) vendors. The consortium will conduct research to evaluate clinical effectiveness impacts of different care approaches on whole-person outcomes and quality metrics. This NOFO is intended to support collaborative research efforts for scaling EHR interventions. The consortium will identify proven primary care interventions for older adults with complex medical issues including multiple chronic conditions-ranging from preventive services and chronic care coordination to deprescribing and goal-setting-then integrate these into interoperable, AI- and machine learning-enhanced platforms to support both individual patient care and population health management. Applicants and their partners will build and deploy user-centered dashboards, validate their effectiveness in real-world settings, and address implementation barriers (people, processes, technology). Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO intends to utilize the U24 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of aging research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.
