About this opportunity
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is soliciting applications for one Clinical Trial Center (CTC) and up to seven Clinical Centers (CCs) under the HeartShare 2.0 program, with applications due June 9, 2026.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, special district governments, small businesses, and independent school districts. Foreign organizations are ineligible. Applicants may submit separate proposals for either the CTC or CC, but must designate different principal investigators if submitting both types. Each application must identify as either CTC or CC in the project title.
The CTC will coordinate precision clinical trial activities focused on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), including master protocol development, project management, recruitment oversight, performance milestones, and scientific conduct of trials. The CCs will recruit and retain heart failure patients and controls, participate in all aspects of conducting deep phenotyping protocols and longitudinal follow-up of HFpEF patients, obtain tissue biopsies (myocardial, skeletal, adipose), and recruit patients for future clinical trials.
The NHLBI intends to commit up to $770,000 in total costs for the one CTC award in FY2027 and up to $2,695,000 in total costs for up to seven CC awards in FY2027. CTC applicants may request up to $500,000 in direct costs for FY2027, $800,000 for FY2028, and up to $1,000,000 annually for FY2029–FY2032. CC applicants may request up to $250,000 in direct costs annually. The maximum project period is six years. All CTC applicants must submit new applications; current CC recipients should submit renewal applications.
Awards will be made as cooperative agreements under the U01 activity code (CFDA 93.837, Cardiovascular Diseases Research). The NHLBI will provide substantial programmatic involvement through designated Project Scientists who participate in steering committees and provide technical assistance. A companion NOFO (RFA-HL-27-009) will support a Data Translation Center for overall HeartShare 2.0 coordination.
