About this opportunity
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), in partnership with the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit applications for large-scale, multisite clinical trials that demonstrate the efficacy or effectiveness of interventions or management strategies reducing opioid use, improving functional outcomes, and reducing pain across acute to chronic pain associated with multiple disease types and conditions; no application due date is currently posted.
This is a continuation of the HEAL Initiative Pain Management Effectiveness Research Network (ERN), utilizing the UG3/UH3 activity code. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, city and township governments, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), state and county governments, public and private higher education institutions, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, and non-domestic entities.
The program prioritizes large-scale, multisite design and encourages collaborative investigations combining expertise in testing existing pharmaceutical, repurposed therapeutics, and/or existing devices. The goal is to expand the suite of evidence-based effective therapeutics to alleviate pain across multiple pain conditions, benefiting patients and families. Applicants are advised to develop meaningful collaborations now in preparation for the NOFO publication.
Funding falls under CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders). Merit review will assess scientific significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives.
