About this opportunity

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is soliciting applications to establish a Data Coordination and Integration Center for the NIH HEAL Initiative, with an application deadline of September 1, 2026. This cooperative agreement (U24) carries a single-award ceiling of $4 million and a maximum project period of five years, with an earliest start date of October 1, 2026. No cost share is required. Clinical trial components are not permitted.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, county and city governments, independent school districts, special district governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), and public or Indian housing authorities. Foreign organizations and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

The Center will manage, curate, harmonize, and integrate complex clinical, -omics, and other datasets from the INTERACT Consortium and related musculoskeletal datasets within the HEAL Initiative. Core responsibilities include establishing a web-accessible information system for data dissemination, developing data standards and common data elements, providing analytic tools for hypothesis generation and secondary analyses, and facilitating data integration across multiple HEAL-funded musculoskeletal pain programs including PRECISION and RE-JOIN initiatives. The Center must coordinate closely with the INTERACT Steering Committee and the HEAL Data Ecosystem to ensure responsible data sharing.

Applications will be evaluated on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and institutional environment. Peer review is scheduled for March 2027, with advisory council review in May 2027. This opportunity is funded under CFDA 93.846 (Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research), 93.273 (Alcohol Research Programs), 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research), and 93.866 (Aging Research), with participating NIH institutes including NIAMS, NIA, NIAAA, and NIDCR.

Synopsis

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) invites applications from eligible organizations to establish a Data Coordination and Integration Center (DCIC) for the NIH HEAL Initiative. This Center will support the coordination and integration of data from both the HEAL INTERACT program and progressively facilitate broader integration of related musculoskeletal datasets and programs. The Data Coordination and Integration Center will lead efforts for managing and integrating complex pain-associated data types and information from the INTERACT Consortium and progressively related datasets. It will also establish a web-accessible information system and disseminate datasets that can facilitate hypothesis generation and be widely used throughout the research community.
