About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center, in partnership with NINDS, NIMH, NIA, NIEHS, NICHD, NEI, NIDCD, and NCCIH, is forecasting continued support for the Global Brain and Nervous System Disorders Research Across the Lifespan program through exploratory grants; a hard date for this forecast opportunity has not been published.
Eligible applicants include universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, non-profit and for-profit organizations, tribal governments, and state and local units of government. Non-domestic applicants are restricted to organizations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as defined by the World Bank; at least one U.S. organization and at least one LMIC organization must participate as partners in each application.
The program supports research on the full spectrum of neuro-health across the lifespan—including neurological, neuromuscular, sensory, neuropsychiatric, neuroinfectious, cognitive, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disease—using basic, clinical, translational, and implementation research approaches. Projects must foster U.S.-LMIC scientist collaborations to develop innovative, cost-effective interventions spanning diagnosis through treatment and implementation, leveraging unique scientific contexts in LMICs not readily present in the United States.
Evaluation emphasizes scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget justification, and relevance to program objectives. Initial scientific review is conducted by a review group assembled by the NIH Center for Scientific Review, followed by secondary review by the Fogarty International Center Advisory Board; funding decisions are made by FIC program officers and executive leadership.
This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.989, International Research and Research Training. The program has distributed more than $1.94 billion across 2,363 awards since 1993, with recent annual award volume declining from 67 in 2023 to 40 in 2025 and 19 through mid-2026.
Forecast synopsis
The Fogarty International Center, with NINDS, NIMH, NIA, NIEHS, NICHD, NEI, NIDCD, and NCCIH, intends to continue support of neuro-health research through the Global Brain and Nervous System Disorders Research Across the Lifespan program. Awards will catalyze and strengthen collaborative research on the brain and nervous system that leverages the unique scientific contexts of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) not readily present in the United States and, subsequently, optimizes our potential to address health needs in the U.S. and globally. Research on the full spectrum of neuro-health across the lifespan is encouraged - including neurological, neuromuscular, sensory, neuropsychiatric, neuroinfectious, cognitive, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disease - and encompassing basic, clinical, translational, and implementation research approaches. Projects will foster collaborations between scientists in the U.S. and LMICs to drive scientific advancement and the development of innovative, cost-effective interventions spanning the care continuum -- from diagnosis through treatment and implementation.
