About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute solicits cooperative agreement applications for the Glioblastoma Therapeutics Network (GTN) to fund research on novel therapies for adult glioblastoma, with applications due January 11, 2027. Each U19 application must be multi-institutional, a structural requirement that narrows the eligible applicant pool and distinguishes this opportunity from single-site awards.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), and other entities as defined in the NOFO. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible. Only one application per institution is permitted, and investigators may serve as PI/multi-PI on only one GTN U19 application, though they may hold other roles on multiple U19s concurrently.
NCI intends to commit $4.4 million in total direct costs in FY 2027 to fund 3–4 awards, with maximum annual budgets of $700,000 per award and project periods up to 5 years. Each U19 must allocate $75,000 in restricted pilot project funds for cross-GTN collaborations.
The program spans late preclinical development through investigational new drug (IND) studies into pilot Phase 0/1 clinical trials. Appropriate therapeutic agents include novel agents or agents approved for other indications and repurposed for glioblastoma treatment following appropriate preclinical studies, provided they can cross the blood-brain barrier. Each U19 must include an Administrative Core with a Network Coordinating Subgroup, two Research Projects (each led by a minimum of one laboratory scientist and one clinical researcher), and at least one Shared Resources Core. The Administrative Core lead(s) must commit minimum effort of 0.6 person months, while the overall PD/PI must devote at least 2.4 aggregate person months across all functions. Non-overlapping clinical trial catchment areas are required across the network.
Applications are evaluated on scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility resources, budget necessity, and alignment with announced program objectives. The funding instruments are CFDA 93.394 (Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research) and CFDA 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research). Applications must follow Multi-Project Instructions and complete registrations in the System for Award Management (SAM), obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), register with eRA Commons, and complete Grants.gov registration before submission. Scientific merit review occurs in July 2027 and advisory council review in October 2027, with the earliest project start date October 1, 2026.

Update #2 · Latest ·
Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits applications for research on novel therapies for adult glioblastoma (GBM). The goal is to improve the treatment of adult GBM by developing novel effective agents that can cross the blood brain barrier (BBB) and testing them clinically. Successful early-stage trials of new drugs from this NOFO would transition seamlessly to later stage trials using well-established NCI clinical trial mechanisms.
To implement this concept, a highly collaborative GBM Therapeutics Network (GTN) of cross-cutting teams will be established, each team capable of driving therapeutic agent(s) from pre-clinical development, through investigational new drugs (IND) studies, into pilot clinical studies in humans. Appropriate therapeutic agents include: (1) novel agents or (2) agents or combinations approved for other indications and repurposed for treatment of GBM following appropriate preclinical studies. The scope of the NOFO, from late pre-clinical through early (Phase 0/1) clinical studies, uniquely spans a gap in the GBM drug development process.
