About this opportunity

The Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Lab is seeking proposals for the development of innovative gasification designs and systems that can convert alternative feedstocks such as biomass, waste, and industrial byproducts into clean syngas for hydrogen production. The program aims to enable low-cost clean hydrogen production with potential for carbon capture, supporting the DOE Hydrogen Shot goals. Eligible applicants include domestic for-profit entities, educational institutions, nonprofits, and state/local governments, with DOE/NNSA national laboratories eligible as subrecipients only. Proposals will be evaluated on the technical merit, innovation, and potential impact of the proposed gasification technologies. The full application deadline is November 22, 2024, with anticipated selection notifications in February 2025 and anticipated awards in May 2025.

DOE expects to make up to 5 awards totaling $15 million, with maximum award sizes up to $3 million and a 20% cost share requirement. The funding opportunity covers two Areas of Interest: 1) R&D towards demonstration of entrained flow gasification technologies, and 2) R&D towards demonstration of fluidized bed gasification technologies. Awards will have a 3-year period of performance, with projects to be performed at locations across the United States, including research facilities, pilot plants, industrial sites, and field demonstrations.

Synopsis

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is for the development of innovative gasification designs/systems for converting alternative feedstocks into syngas to enable the low-cost production of clean hydrogen. The program is motivated by the unique potential of carbon capture-friendly oxygen-blown gasification processes to convert solid mixed biomass and waste feedstocks to clean hydrogen, which is useful as a decarbonized energy carrier and for synthesis of decarbonized transportation fuels, chemicals, electricity, and other useful products.
