About this opportunity

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering Brownfield Multipurpose (MP) Grants through its Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization to support the assessment, cleanup, and sustainable reuse of brownfield sites across the United States. These cooperative agreements are designed to help communities address properties complicated by potential hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants through comprehensive site remediation efforts. Eligible applicants include local governments, land clearance authorities, state entities, federally recognized tribes, and certain nonprofit organizations, with a preference for projects allocating at least 70% of funds to site-specific work and 25% to site remediation. The EPA will evaluate applications based on demonstrated community need, site ownership, and potential for sustainable redevelopment, with a focus on communities historically affected by economic disinvestment and environmental contamination. The application deadline for these grants is January 28, 2026, with anticipated award notifications expected in September 2026.

The funding opportunity provides up to $20 million for approximately 20 cooperative agreements, with individual grants not exceeding $1,000,000 per applicant. Grant recipients may request funding to address hazardous substances and/or petroleum contamination at one or more brownfield sites, with activities at each approved site potentially exceeding $200,000. Importantly, a grant recipient may only expend funds for remediation of a brownfield site it owns and cannot issue subawards to other site owners for remediation. The performance period for these grants will span multiple years, allowing comprehensive assessment, planning, community engagement, and cleanup activities. Sites will be located throughout the United States, with the EPA determining site-specific assessment and cleanup eligibility throughout the project period.

Synopsis

The Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization is announcing the availability of $20 million dollars to award approximately 20 cooperative agreements for the Multipurpose Grant Program. Multipurpose Grants provide funding to carry out a range of eligible assessment and cleanup activities, including planning and additional community engagement activities. An applicant may request funding up to $1,000,000 to address hazardous substances and/or petroleum contamination at one or more brownfield sites. Activities carried out at each approved, eligible site may exceed $200,000. EPA will determine eligibility for site-specific assessment and cleanup activities after the award of the grant throughout the project period. A Multipurpose Grant recipient may only expend grant funds for the remediation of a brownfield site it owns and may not issue a subaward to another site owner to conduct the remediation.
