About this opportunity
The Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization is offering $58.7 million in Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grants for fiscal year 2026, with approximately 39 cooperative agreements available. These grants are designed to help entities develop inventories of brownfield sites, conduct community involvement activities, perform site assessments, and create cleanup and reuse plans. The program requires a lead eligible entity (such as a local government, nonprofit, or Tribal entity) to partner with two to four entities lacking independent grant management capacity. Applicants will be evaluated across multiple criteria, with a total possible score of 160 points, focusing on project area description, community needs, task descriptions, and programmatic capability. The application deadline is January 28, 2026, with a maximum of $200,000 available per site assessment.
Each coalition must assess at least two sites within each member's geographic boundary, with grant awards supporting Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments. The cooperative agreements will have performance periods typically spanning four to five years, supporting the assessment, cleanup, and potential redevelopment of brownfield sites that may be complicated by hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. Geographically, these grants can be applied to sites across the United States, targeting areas with blighted, vacant, or underutilized properties. The EPA will conduct administrative and technical evaluations to determine the merit and relevance of each project, with final approval made by EPA Regional Award Officials.
Synopsis
The Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization is announcing the availability of $58.7 million dollars to award approximately 39 cooperative agreements under the Brownfields Assessment Coalition grant program. Assessment Grants provide funding for developing inventories of brownfield sites, prioritizing sites, conducting community involvement activities, conducting planning, conducting site assessments, developing site-specific cleanup plans, and developing reuse plans related to brownfield sites. A portion of the Assessment Grant funding must be used to conduct site assessments. Assessment Coalition Grants are designed for one "lead" eligible entity to partner with two to four eligible entities that do not have the capacity to apply for and manage their own EPA cooperative agreement and otherwise would not have access to Brownfields Grant resources.
