About this opportunity
The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), a component of the U.S. Department of Justice, is soliciting applications for the FY26 School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) to fund evidence-based school safety improvements, with applications due August 4, 2026. A mandatory local cost share of at least 25 percent in the form of cash is required unless a match waiver is requested and approved.
Eligible applicants are states, units of local government, Indian tribes, and their public agencies. The COPS Office anticipates up to $73 million in available funding, supporting approximately 200 awards at up to $500,000 per award. The period of performance is 36 months, beginning October 1, 2026, with place of performance at schools and school grounds within the recipient's jurisdiction.
Funded activities include coordination with local law enforcement; specialized training for law enforcement officers in violence prevention; installation of physical security measures such as metal detectors, locks, and improved lighting; acquisition and installation of emergency notification technology systems; and other security enhancements that provide significant improvements in school safety, as determined by the COPS Office Director.
Applicants must submit assurance that the application was prepared after consultation with multidisciplinary stakeholders including law enforcement officers, licensed mental health professionals, social workers, teachers, principals, school personnel, parents, students, and school violence researchers or academics where practical. Consultation must ensure that funded improvements are consistent with a comprehensive approach to preventing school violence and individualized to the needs of each school. Applicants failing to provide this assurance are deemed ineligible.
Award recipients must submit semiannual programmatic performance reports, quarterly Federal Financial Reports (SF-425), and a final closeout report. Recipients agree to participate in all award monitoring activities conducted by the COPS Office, the Office of the Inspector General, or designated entities, including site visits, office-based reviews, and compliance assessments.
