About this opportunity

The U.S. Mission to Nigeria is soliciting applications for Cultural Property Agreement Implementation Grants to promote projects that support the 2022 U.S.-Nigeria cultural property agreement and connect cultural heritage with public diplomacy goals. Eligible applicants include non-governmental organizations, museums, educational institutions, and ministries of culture seeking between $10,000 and $150,000 to fund activities such as training, inventories, site security, and public education from February 2024 through January 2027. Priority will be given to projects that strengthen cultural property protection in Nigeria by building capacity, promoting sustainability, engaging stakeholders, addressing protection needs and supporting the objectives of the Cultural Antiquities Task Force. Applications are due by January 11, 2024 and will be evaluated based on alignment with protection needs and ability to build capacity and promote sustainability.

Successful applicants will receive awards ranging from $10,000 to $150,000 to support implementation projects in Nigeria from February 2024 through January 2027 with a focus on training, inventories, site security, public education and other activities that meet the goals of the 2022 U.S.-Nigeria cultural property agreement and the Cultural Antiquities Task Force of combatting trafficking and protecting Nigerian cultural property. Grantees must submit performance and financial reports as outlined in the award documents.

Synopsis

The U.S Mission to Nigeria is pleased to announce the call for application for the 2024 cycle of the Cultural Property Agreement Implementation Grant (CPAIG) Program. The deadline for the submission of proposals for Round 1 application is January 11, 2024 at 11:59pm.

CPAIG Program Background and Objectives:

In 2020, the CPAIG program was established by the Department of State in consultation with the interagency Cultural Antiquities Task Force (CATF) to support CATF's anti-trafficking mission by promoting the implementation of cultural property agreements between the United States and foreign governments or emergency import restrictions. Cultural property agreements and emergency import restriction put into practice U.S. obligations under the UNESCO 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, as implemented by U.S. legislation. The United States has a Cultural Property Agreement in place with Nigeria, signed in January 2022, that protects Nigeria's antiquities by prohibiting their import into the United States.
