About this opportunity

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking research proposals through February 1, 2024 to inform management of wild horses and burros under the Wild Horse and Burro Resource Management grant program. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, non-profits, local and tribal governments. Proposals must involve research studies on wild horses and burros and will result in cooperative agreements subject to animal care protocols. Priority will be given to developing fertility control methods, examining animal-land relationships including climate impacts, and improving census and adoption programs. Proposals will be evaluated on research need and technical approach.

Up to eight cooperative agreements totaling $2 million will be awarded to support research over periods up to five years beginning in June 2024. Funded work must benefit the BLM's wild horse and burro program and advance the Department of the Interior's priorities regarding land and water conservation. Research performance will inform public lands management across ten western states where the BLM administers wild horse and burro populations totaling over 80,000 animals.
