About this opportunity

The National Park Service is soliciting applications for formula grants to support the operation of Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) under the FY2026 Historic Preservation Fund program, with applications due July 21, 2026. Eligible applicants are federally recognized Native American tribal governments with existing Partnership Agreements with the National Park Service under 54 U.S.C. 302702 of the National Historic Preservation Act; this program is restricted to THPOs and does not accept other applicant types. No cost sharing is required.

Total program funding is $23.75 million distributed to 235 eligible THPOs through a formula-based apportionment: 80% of appropriations divided equally among all THPOs and 20% apportioned based on tribal land area. Individual award amounts range from a floor of $83,000 to a ceiling of $181,000. The project period runs October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2027. Work is performed on tribal lands where each THPO operates under its Partnership Agreement.

Grants support THPO operations in eight program areas: nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Preservation Tax Credits, review and compliance for Federal undertakings, survey and inventory, physical preservation development, preservation planning, Certified Local Government work, and grant administration. Staff and projects must comply with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Recipients placing historic properties under physical preservation assistance must execute preservation covenants lasting 5–20 years depending on grant amount.

A statutory cap limits combined administration and indirect costs to 25% of the total grant award. Awards are noncompetitive; funding is determined by the approved apportionment formula. Applicants must register in SAM.gov and submit required federal forms (SF-424, SF-424A or SF-424C, SF-424B) and a project abstract summary through Grants.gov. The program operates under CFDA 15.904, Historic Preservation Fund Grants-In-Aid.
