About this opportunity
The National Park Service is soliciting applications for FY2026 Historic Preservation Fund Annual State Historic Preservation Office Grants with a closing deadline of June 30, 2026, though a deadline extension applies to US Territory SHPO applications. This formula-grant program requires a mandatory 40% non-Federal cost share, except for insular areas and some territories.
Eligible applicants are state governments and one nonprofit organization: Ohio History Connection. The program supports operation of State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) in the 50 states, 5 territories, 3 Freely Associated States, and District of Columbia. Total estimated program funding is $62.15 million with 59 expected awards. Individual award amounts range from a floor of $316,000 to a ceiling of $2.2 million, determined by an apportionment formula approved by the Secretary of the Interior. The anticipated project period runs October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2028.
Funding supports identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties through survey, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, Federal tax incentives, National Register nominations, and distribution of funding to Certified Local Governments. SHPOs must allocate a minimum of 10% pass-through funding to Certified Local Governments and cannot exceed 25% of total costs for combined administration and indirect costs.
All funded projects constitute undertakings under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Staff and projects must comply with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation where relevant. Recipients must register in SAM.gov and Grants.gov and submit standard 424 series forms, project abstract, organizational chart, staffing summary, staff qualification certification, and budget narrative. Assistance Listing number is 15.904.
