About this opportunity
The National Park Service is soliciting applications for the FY2025 Historic Preservation Fund African American Civil Rights History Grants program with an application due date of July 14, 2026, and no cost-sharing requirement.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal governments and organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, and public and private higher education institutions. Projects must document and preserve African American civil rights history from the transatlantic slave trade forward and must fall into one of four categories: survey and planning, research and documentation, education, or collection conservation and digitization.
The program will distribute approximately $24,000,000 across approximately 45 awards, with individual grants ranging from a floor of $15,000 to a ceiling of $100,000 per award. The period of performance runs November 1, 2026, through November 30, 2029. Administrative costs cannot exceed 25% of total project cost by statute.
Evaluation criteria carry equal weight of 25 points each: significance to African American civil rights, urgency and threat to resources, feasibility within three years and a reasonable budget, and long-term sustainability with community engagement. Projects will be evaluated against the NPS framework document Civil Rights in America: A Framework for Identifying Significant Sites.
Required application materials include SF-424, SF-424A, and SF-424B forms; project abstract summary; project description and budget justification worksheets; project images; national register eligibility documentation; and supporting letters if applicable. All applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov and registered in SAM.gov for a Unique Entity Identifier. Award notifications are expected approximately six months following the deadline, around January 2027.
The opportunity is funded under CFDA 15.966, Historic Preservation Fund Grants-in-Aid for Competitive Grants.
