About this opportunity

The National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program (NPS ABPP) is offering Fiscal Year 2025 Preservation Planning Grants to support projects that contribute to the preservation and interpretation of historic battlefields and associated sites of armed conflict on American soil. Eligible applicants include state, local, and tribal governments, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. Projects will be evaluated based on five criteria: preservation goals, FY2025 programmatic focus areas, objectives and activities, administration and implementation, and partnerships and engagement. The application deadline is March 31, 2025, with an anticipated award date of June 30, 2025.

The Preservation Planning Grants will provide approximately $1,198,000 in total funding through an estimated 15 awards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 each. Projects must focus on preserving or interpreting historic battlefields and associated sites of armed conflict that shaped the origins or growth of the United States. The grants support a variety of activities including research, planning, documentation, surveys, educational programs, exhibits, and collections management, with a performance period from September 30, 2025, to September 30, 2027.

Synopsis

Administered by the National Park Service through the American Battlefield Protection Program (NPS ABPP), Preservation Planning Grants support a variety of projects that contribute to the preservation and interpretation of historic battlefields and associated sites of armed conflict on American soil by providing financial assistance to eligible applicants based on the outcome of a competitive merit review process. These grants are funded by direct appropriation from the U.S. Congress and are authorized under 54 U.S.C. § 308102.Due to the large number of activities that the Preservation Planning Grants may fund, applicants are encouraged to reach out to NPS ABPP directly with any questions about potential project eligibility at abpp_ppg@nps.gov.
