About this opportunity

This notice of funding opportunity announces FY2024 NAGPRA Repatriation Grants totaling $3.4 million from the Department of the Interior National Park Service to fund the transfer of Native American human remains and cultural items from museums to Indian tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act grant program. Eligible applicants include Indian tribes, Alaska native villages, native Hawaiian organizations, and museums that have control of NAGPRA collections and received federal funds. Applicants must demonstrate that items being repatriated were published in a Federal Register notice and legal transfer has occurred. Selection will be competitive based on activities, partnerships, project implementation, and impact. Applications are due in 2024 and awards will be made on a rolling basis through May 2025 for projects lasting up to 12 months.

Individual awards will range from $1,000 to $25,000 for approximately 15 recipients. Eligible grant activities must be associated with the transfer of specific human remains and cultural items published in Federal Register notices of inventory completion or intent to repatriate where legal control has been transferred. Projects will fund activities such as travel for repatriation, transportation of items, contamination testing, reburial costs, and administrative expenses.

Synopsis

Grant funds must be used for REPATRIATION under NAGPRA, which means the transfer of control of Native American human remains and/or cultural items to lineal descendants, Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. Repatriation includes disposition of culturally unidentifiable Native American human remains (CUI) according to 43 CFR § 10.11. Repatriation projects defray costs associated with the packaging, transportation, contamination removal, reburial, and/or storage of NAGPRA-related human remains and/or cultural items.
