About this opportunity

This Notice of Funding Opportunity from the National Park Service announces FY2024 NAGPRA Consultation/Documentation Grants totaling an estimated $3.4 million. Eligible applicants include federally recognized Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages, Native Hawaiian organizations, museums receiving federal funds, and tribal organizations seeking to facilitate consultation and collaboration to carry out the NAGPRA process. Applicants must submit proposals by March 8, 2024 for projects determining control, treatment, repatriation, and disposition of Native American cultural items through consultation or documentation activities. Evaluation will consider project objectives, activities, partnerships, implementation plans, impact evaluations, and statements regarding duplication of efforts and historic properties.

Individual awards will range from $5,000 to $100,000 for one to two year project periods beginning in August 2024. Eligible activities include research, training, travel, meetings, collections care, and disposition of human remains and cultural items. Funds must support the goals of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to determine geographical origin, cultural affiliation, and other facts surrounding acquisition of Native American cultural items.

Synopsis

Grant funds must be used for CONSULTATION and/or DOCUMENTATION projects under NAGPRA. Consultation projects support efforts related to revising a NAGPRA inventory and making or responding to requests for repatriation of items in a NAGPRA summary. Documentation projects support determining the geographical origin, cultural affiliation, and other basic facts surrounding the acquisition of Native American cultural items. Consultation and documentation projects should lead to determining control, treatment, repatriation, and disposition of NAGPRA cultural items.
