About this opportunity
This competitive grant program provides financial assistance to Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the repair, rehabilitation, and physical preservation of historic structures on their campuses. Administered by the National Park Service, approximately $11 million is available to fund an estimated 23 projects ranging from $50,000 to $750,000 each for the repair of historic structures listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Eligible applicants are accredited HBCU institutions and projects must involve properties listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Applications are due by January 17, 2024 and awards will be announced by August 2024. Projects will be evaluated based on national program priorities, preservation planning and architectural quality, commitment to long-term maintenance, and communication of historical significance.
Funds may be used for preservation planning, architectural services, rehabilitation work meeting Secretary of Interior standards, and national register nominations. Successful applicants must agree to provide long-term maintenance through preservation easements proportional to award amounts. Awards will support work conducted at and benefitting the eligible properties of accredited HBCU institution applicants located within the United States and its territories.
Synopsis
In 1988, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Preservation grant program was established to document, preserve, and stabilize historic structures on HBCU campuses. The HBCU grant program exists to repair historic structures on campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as contributing to a National Register or National Historic Landmark historic district. Projects must meet major program selection criteria and all work must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Projects may also fund survey, nomination, and preservation planning for historic HBCU campuses.
