About this opportunity
The Department of Energy Office of Science seeks applicants for the FY 2027 Continuation of Solicitation for the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program, with applications due by September 30, 2027. Cost sharing is not required for basic research awards under this program, except for Other Transaction Authority awards where non-Federal parties should provide 50 percent cost sharing when practicable.
Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, nonprofit and for-profit entities, state and local governments, other federal agencies, and consortia of these entities. DOE and NNSA National Laboratories may participate as subrecipients but not as prime applicants. All applicants except 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations engaged in post-1995 lobbying activities are eligible. Applicants must register with SAM.gov and obtain a Unique Entity Identifier before submission.
Approximately $400 million in current and future fiscal year funds supports projects across six program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy and Nuclear Physics, and Isotope R&D and Production. Individual award sizes depend on application merit and available appropriations. Projects typically span three years, with periods of performance ranging from six months to five years. Budget periods generally end between December 1 and June 30.
The NOFO remains open throughout the fiscal year; specific program areas within ASCR and BES feature target submission dates ranging from November 2026 through February 2027 for FY 2027 consideration, though applications submitted after target dates may be held for future selection cycles. Pre-applications are required or encouraged for certain ASCR panels.
Merit review evaluates scientific and technical merit, appropriateness of proposed methods, personnel competency, and budget reasonableness. CFDA 81.049 governs this opportunity. Applicants must comply with entity of concern prohibitions and foreign asset control sanctions requirements.
