About this opportunity
The Department of Energy (DOE) Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program is launching the Fusion Innovation Research Engine (FIRE) Collaboratives, a transformative initiative aimed at creating a fusion innovation ecosystem. Through this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), DOE is seeking applications to form virtual, centrally managed "Collaboratives" that will bridge FES's basic science research programs and the growing fusion industry. The Collaboratives will focus on addressing key science and technology gaps across four fusion energy ecosystems: materials and technology, blanket and fuel cycle systems, enabling technologies, and advanced simulations. Eligible applicants include domestic entities such as universities, national laboratories, and industry. Pre-applications are due July 9, 2024, with full applications due August 27, 2024.
DOE anticipates making awards of $2-5 million per year for 4-year project periods under this $180 million FOA, funded through the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049). Cost sharing is not required, and DOE/NNSA national laboratories and other federal agencies may participate as subrecipients.
