About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is forecasting a funding opportunity announcement to solicit applications for Cancer Epidemiology Cohorts: Building the Next Generation of Research Cohorts through cooperative agreements; the NOFO has not yet published and no application due date is specified in this forecast notice.
The funding opportunity will be open to higher education institutions (public and private), state and county governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations), independent school districts, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public or Indian housing authorities, small businesses, and for-profit organizations.
The initiative aims to support establishment of the next generation of cancer epidemiology cohorts to address knowledge gaps in cancer etiology and survivorship. Fundable research will lay foundational resources and research enabling future prospective studies capable of identifying environmental, molecular, genetic, lifestyle, clinical, and other drivers of cancer risk and outcomes. Clinical trials are not allowed under this mechanism.
This opportunity operates under the Cancer Control program (CFDA 93.399), which funds cancer prevention and control research across hypothesis development through implementation. The program has historically supported research in five phases, with primary emphasis on Phases 2 through 5 for cancer control and all phases for cancer prevention, including cancer epidemiology, screening and early detection, health disparities research, supportive care and survivorship, and surveillance research.
Applicants will be evaluated on scientific merit and general significance of proposed objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity relative to project scope, and relevance to announced program objectives. All applications undergo scientific peer review and must be approved by the National Cancer Advisory Board before funding.
