About this opportunity
Paragraph 1:
The Department of the Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR), along with the Army Research Office (ARO) and Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), is seeking basic research proposals for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Department of Defense Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative (MURI). The program addresses high-risk, multidisciplinary research topics across 22 specified areas in science and engineering, including aerodynamics, materials science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Key deadlines include white paper inquiries due April 18, 2025, white papers due May 2, 2025, and full proposals due September 5, 2025. Proposals will be evaluated based on their scientific and technical merit, potential for significant scientific breakthroughs, and the qualifications of the multidisciplinary research team.
Paragraph 2:
The total funding available is approximately $170 million, with typical annual funding per grant up to $1.5 million for 5 years. Awards will be made as grants, with ARO also offering cooperative agreements. The research is expected to be primarily performed at U.S. institutions of higher education, with one Principal Investigator serving as the technical point of contact and one institution as the primary awardee.
Synopsis
DoD's MURI program addresses high-risk basic research and attempts to understand or achieve something that has never been done before. The program was initiated 40 years ago and it has regularly produced significant scientific breakthroughs with far reaching consequences to the fields of science, economic growth, and revolutionary new military technologies. Key to the program's success is the close management of the MURI projects by Service Program Officers and their active role in providing research guidance.
