About this opportunity

The Corporation for National and Community Service is soliciting applications for volunteer service projects that mobilize Americans to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday as a meaningful day of community engagement while addressing local community needs. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, Indian Tribes, institutions of higher education, local governments, state service commissions, and states or U.S. Territories. Applicants must maintain active System for Award Management (SAM) registration with a valid Unique Entity Identifier and demonstrate recruitment and engagement of volunteers, comprehensive training and orientation plans, supervision strategies, ongoing volunteer opportunities beyond MLK Day, and evidence-based volunteer retention practices. Applications will be evaluated using three weighted criteria: Program Design (50 percent), Organizational Capability (25 percent), and Cost-Effectiveness and Budget Adequacy (25 percent), with an unweighted Executive Summary component. The application deadline is April 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with successful applicants to be notified in July 2026 and awards issued in August 2026.

Award amounts will range from $100,000 to $500,000 on a cost reimbursement basis for one-year grant periods, with three-year grant awards anticipated and continuation awards dependent on appropriations availability and satisfactory performance. Applicants must provide a 70 percent cost match (cash and/or in-kind contributions) from public and private sources combined, limiting the federal share to 30 percent of total program budgets. Projects must serve nationwide communities, including urban and rural areas, with priority consideration given to initiatives addressing economically disadvantaged populations, meeting immediate community needs, and implementing evidence-based volunteer engagement practices. All awards are subject to Uniform Guidance requirements, National Service Criminal History Check compliance, and AmeriCorps General and Program-Specific Terms and Conditions.
