About this opportunity

The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) within the Administration for Community Living is seeking applications for the Field Initiated Projects Program (Development). The purpose of this program is to generate new knowledge and develop methods, procedures, and technologies to maximize the inclusion, integration, employment, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency of people with disabilities, especially those with high support needs. Eligible applicants include tribal governments, higher education institutions, state and local governments, and non-profit organizations. Proposals should address one of three major outcome domains: community living, health/function, or employment, and must use research to create beneficial materials, devices, systems, or interventions. Letters of Intent are due by November 12, 2024, and full applications are due by December 9, 2024.

NIDILRR plans to make approximately 15 awards for 36-month development projects, with up to $250,000 per 12-month budget period. The work is to be performed at the recipients' facilities, often involving collaborations with partner organizations. Recent awards under the broader NIDILRR program have ranged from $100,000 to $1.8 million, supporting Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers and Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers focused on various disability-related topics.

Synopsis

The purpose of the Field Initiated Projects program is to generate new knowledge through research or to develop methods, procedures, and technologies -- to maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family/caregiver support, and economic and self-sufficiency of people with disabilities, especially people with the greatest support needs. In carrying out a development project under a Field Initiated Projects development grant, a grantee must use knowledge and understanding gained from research to create materials, devices, systems, methods, measures, techniques, tools, prototypes, processes, or intervention protocols that are beneficial to the target population. Please note that this will be the funding opportunity for Field Initiated Projects development proposals. We will invite Field Initiated Projects research proposals under a separate announcement. NIDILRR plans to make 15 Field Initiated Projects awards. Grants will have a 36-month project period, with three 12-month budget periods. NIDILRR's Field Initiated Projects will include a combination of research applications and development applications, depending on the combined ranking of individual research and development applications by the peer review panel.
