About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is offering the Fellowships Open Book Program (FOBP), a limited competition grant that provides $6,600 fixed-amount awards to U.S. nonprofit publishers and accredited nonprofit higher education institutions. The grants are intended to support the release of open access digital editions of humanities books whose underlying research was previously funded by eligible NEH fellowship or grant programs. Publishers must release the e-books under a Creative Commons license, making them freely downloadable, and include specific metadata, distribution requirements, and a $600 author royalty. The program has three application deadlines in 2025 (March 12, July 16, and November 12), with anticipated total funding of approximately $80,000 to support around 12 awards per deadline cycle.

The grants fall under the Promotion of the Humanities Office of Digital Humanities program (CFDA 45.169) and aim to make outstanding humanities scholarship digitally accessible to teachers, students, scholars, and the public. The period of performance for each award is 12 months, with funds disbursed as a reimbursement upon completion of project milestones. Eligible books must have been published during or after 2010 and clearly draw on research from specified NEH fellowship programs.

Synopsis

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities, in partnership with the NEH Division of Research Programs and Division of Education Programs, is accepting applications for the Fellowships Open Book Program. This limited competition awards publishers a $6,600 grant to release open access digital editions of books whose underlying research was funded by an eligible NEH fellowship or grant. (See NOFO section A. Program Description for a complete list of eligible programs.) Publishers must release e-books under a Creative Commons license, making those books free for anyone to download. The book could be a forthcoming title (to be open access upon first release) or it could be a book that was published, reissued, or printed in a new edition during or after calendar year 2010.
