About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is offering the Fellowships Open Book Program, a limited competition grant opportunity that provides $6,600 fixed-amount awards to nonprofit publishers and higher education institutions. The purpose is to publish open access digital editions of books whose underlying research was supported by eligible NEH fellowship or grant programs during or after 2017. Applicants must release the e-books under a Creative Commons license and distribute them through at least two major channels by the end of the one-year period of performance. There are three annual application deadlines on March 13, July 10, and November 13, 2024, with anticipated award notification occurring approximately four months after each deadline.

The NEH expects to award approximately 12 grants per deadline, totaling $80,000. This funding opportunity is assigned to the NEH's Promotion of the Humanities Office of Digital Humanities grant program (CFDA 45.169), which supports a wide range of digital humanities initiatives. Eligible applicants are U.S. nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status or accredited public or 501(c)(3) institutions of higher education.

Synopsis

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities, in partnership with the NEH Division of Research Programs and Division of Education Programs, is accepting applications for the Fellowships Open Book Program. This limited competition awards publishers a $6,600 grant to release open access digital editions of books whose underlying research was funded by an eligible NEH fellowship or grant. (See NOFO section A. Program Description for a complete list of eligible programs.) Publishers must release e-books under a Creative Commons license, making those books free for anyone to download. The book could be a forthcoming title (to be open access upon first release) or it could be a book that was published, reissued, or printed in a new edition during or after calendar year 2017.
