About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is soliciting applications for individual Fellowships grants supporting exceptional humanistic research projects focused exclusively on American history and culture or Western civilization. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens and foreign nationals with at least three years of U.S. residency prior to the April 22, 2026 application deadline at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Applications must include a three-page project narrative, one-page work plan, one-page bibliography, two-page resume, and two letters of reference submitted by June 4, 2026. Peer reviewers will evaluate submissions based on intellectual significance, quality of conception and organization, feasibility of the work plan, applicant qualifications as a humanities interpreter, and likelihood of project completion with sound dissemination plans. Eligible project outputs include books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, e-books, digital projects, translations with annotations, and critical editions at any stage of development.

Approximately 60 grants ranging from $30,000 to $60,000 will be awarded from a total anticipated funding pool of approximately $3.6 million, calculated at $5,000 per month for full-time work. Fellowship periods last 6 to 12 months, with project start dates between April 1, 2027, and September 1, 2028, and award announcements anticipated in January 2027. No cost sharing is required, and recipients must commit to full-time work on their projects during the performance period. All applications must be submitted through Grants.gov, and applicants cannot concurrently hold other NEH individual awards or be enrolled in degree-granting programs.

Synopsis

NEH Fellowships are grants to individual scholars pursuing projects that embody exceptional humanistic research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. Applications must clearly articulate a project's value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. These awards provide recipients with time to write, to travel, and to conduct research and other project-related activities. NEH encourages submissions from independent scholars and junior scholars. Projects are eligible at any stage. The 2026 Fellowships competition will accept only projects for research in American history and culture and Western civilization.
