About this opportunity

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture is soliciting applications for the Federally Recognized Tribes Extension Program (FRTEP), which funds extension education programs that deliver science-based knowledge and informal education to address unique needs in Tribal communities, including youth development, farm productivity, natural resource management, economic and workforce development, and human health initiatives. Eligible applicants are 1862, 1890, and 1994 Land-grant Colleges and Universities that can demonstrate previous work with the Tribe served and propose innovative approaches through cooperative linkages. Key requirements include the submission of a Data Management Plan and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tribe served, with Project Directors or Co-Project Directors required to attend one mandatory meeting during each project year. Merit review will evaluate applications using eight criteria: advancement of Tribal Extension quality, previous work with the Tribe, proposed approach and cooperative linkages, institutional capability, key personnel qualifications, budget and cost-effectiveness, project evaluation methodology, and data management plans. The application deadline is June 8, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time, with submissions required through Grants.gov.

Approximately $4,000,000 is available for this funding cycle, with an anticipated 37 awards of $102,000 per year for an initial four-year funding cycle totaling $408,000 per project, and similar funding levels potentially available for up to three additional years based on satisfactory performance and available appropriations. The program prohibits indirect costs and certain expenses including entertainment, meals, alcoholic beverages, and tuition remission. Performance locations include Federally Recognized Indian Reservations and Tribal jurisdictions nationwide, where funded projects will deliver extension education services to improve the quality of life and economic well-being of individuals and families on Tribal lands.
