About this opportunity

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting applications for cooperative agreements and grants under the Coastal Program FY26 to support fish and wildlife habitat protection and restoration projects in priority coastal ecosystems, with a September 30, 2026 deadline.

Eligible applicants include state and county governments, city and township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, higher education institutions (public and private), Tribal governments and organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, public housing authorities, individuals, small businesses, and for-profit organizations. Mandatory pre-application coordination with local Coastal Program staff is required before submission. No cost share is required. The program has an estimated $6,000,000 in total funding with approximately 150 expected awards, with individual award amounts ranging from $1 to $500,000.

Projects must align with regional strategic implementation plans, support conservation of Federal trust species and at-risk species, contribute to habitat connectivity and coastal resilience, and provide measurable benefits to coastal habitats and communities. The program will not fund land acquisition (though title searches and appraisals are allowable), compensatory mitigation projects, foreign travel, or pre-award costs. Projects must be based on sound biological principles and best available science.

The anticipated project period runs from May 19, 2026 through September 30, 2030. Applications received by May 30, 2026 are considered for FY26 funding; later applications may not be awarded until the following fiscal year. Merit review is conducted by local and regional program staff. Applicants must register in SAM.gov (except individuals applying as natural persons), apply through GrantSolutions, and comply with 2 CFR 200 cost principles and federal reporting requirements including financial reports and FFATA compliance. The Assistance Listing number is 15.630.

Synopsis

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) Coastal Program provides technical and financial assistance to partners to support projects that protect and restore fish and wildlife habitats on public and private lands in priority coastal ecosystems. This support is provided through cooperative agreements with conservation partners and landowners, including state and Tribal agencies. Coastal Program staff work with partners, stakeholders, and other Service programs in important areas for conservation. They implement regional strategic plans that identify priority species and habitats for conservation in these focus areas.Applicants seeking technical or financial assistance from the Coastal Program are required to contact a local Program office BEFORE developing or submitting an application. You can find this information in the current strategic plan at this link or by contacting your local Coastal Program office at https://www.fws.gov/program/coastal/contact-us.Projects are developed collaboratively by partners and Service field staff. All Coastal Program projects must align with the missions of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Coastal Program. They are also based on sound biological principles and the best available science.

Eligibility

The Coastal Program reserves the right to reject projects that do not align with the regional strategic implementation plans or program priorities. We do not support projects that generate compensatory mitigation credits under a Federal or state regulatory program or accept mitigation or in-lieu funds as non-Federal cost share for a project. The Coastal Program does not fund land acquisition, although it can support title searches and real estate appraisals. We require that all interested applicants contact their local Coastal Program office before submitting an application.
