About this opportunity

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeks competitive proposals for research and management projects that advance scientific understanding of Chinook and Chum salmon in Alaska's Yukon River basin. Eligible applicants include commercial entities, individuals, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, state and local governments, federally recognized Indian tribes, and CESU Network members, with no cost-sharing requirement. Projects must address one or more of four priority categories: achieving fishery management objectives, building public support, improving understanding of salmon biology, and assessing or conserving salmon habitats, with additional consideration given to proposals addressing fall Chum Salmon stock assessment and genetics, or Yukon River salmon management awareness and participation. Proposals are evaluated using a 35-point merit review system based on project overview, introduction, technical implementation details, and capacity to deliver within budget constraints. The application deadline is May 18, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, with submission required electronically through either GrantSolutions.gov or Grants.gov.

The program anticipates distributing up to $260,000 in total federal funding for fiscal year 2026 through approximately five awards, with individual award amounts typically ranging from $30,000 to $80,000 (average $51,000) and maximum awards not exceeding $100,000. Funded projects must be one year in length, with work beginning in May 2026 and activities completed by early 2028, including final reporting and expenditure of funds within 90 days of project completion. All project work will be performed in the Alaska portion of the Yukon River, and applicants are strongly encouraged to incorporate local capacity from Yukon River communities and coordinate with state and federal regulatory agencies. Applicants will receive notice of approval or disapproval within 60 calendar days of submitting a detailed proposal.
