About this opportunity
This Traditional Conservation Grant Program, administered by the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, will provide funding to support state programs that conserve and recover threatened and endangered species. Eligible applicants are state agencies that have an active cooperative agreement with the Service covering federally listed resident species. Successful applicants will receive funding to conduct management, research, monitoring and outreach activities that benefit federally listed species, candidate species, at-risk species or species delisted within the last five years. Applications will be evaluated based on species listing status, implementation of recovery plan actions, relevance to program goals, technical merit and cost effectiveness, and must be submitted by April 29, 2024 for projects in Region 3.
The program will award an estimated $659,613 total across multiple grants to fund high-priority recovery actions. Awarded funds must be expended within three years of the project period and will support work conducted within the states that have eligible cooperative agreements with the Service, such as management of listed species, monitoring of candidate and at-risk species, and outreach. Eligible states are encouraged to coordinate with the Service to develop competitive proposals aligned with regional conservation priorities.
Synopsis
The principle objective of the Traditional Conservation Grant Program is to support the development and implementation of States' programs to conserve and recover threatened and endangered species under the Service's jurisdiction. Financial assistance, provided in the form of grants, can be used to support projects that have direct benefits for federally listed species, candidate and at-risk species, and recently delisted species. States may apply for funding to conduct conservation work on federally-listed resident species that are included in the State's cooperative agreement. States may also apply for funding to monitor candidate, at-risk, and recently delisted species. Projects proposed for funding may involve management, research, monitoring, and outreach activities or any combination thereof. Applications should include clear and specific information about how the proposed work would contribute to species recovery or prevent the need to list a species under the Endangered Species Act. Successful applications will be those that clearly demonstrate a direct benefit to the species or its habitat.
