About this opportunity

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is soliciting proposals for the MENTOR-HAWLT program to develop capacity to address wildlife trafficking in Kenya through holistic, evidence-based approaches. Applicants must describe goals, objectives, activities, stakeholder engagement, and evaluation plans to strengthen an interdisciplinary team's cross-disciplinary capacity to plan, implement, and evaluate approaches integrating social science. Proposals will be evaluated based on systematic understanding of issues, evidence-based methods, ethical standards, inclusion, collaboration capabilities, and implementation capacity, with an application deadline of March 4, 2024.

The anticipated single award amount is up to $1,000,000 under the Federal Assistance Listing Number 15.679 for the Combating Wildlife Trafficking program. The period of performance is expected to be from July 1, 2024 to March 31, 2027, with all work conducted in Kenya and focusing on selected species to reduce wildlife trafficking through strengthened capacity to address its human dimensions.

Synopsis

The MENTOR-HALWT (Holistically Addressing WildLife Trafficking) conservation fellowship program focuses on holistically addressing wildlife trafficking, with an emphasis on integrating robust social science to understand and address the human dimensions of the issue. This inaugural MENTOR-HAWLT program will take place in Kenya, a land rich in biodiversity and characterized by varied landscapes and thousands of wild plant and animal species, most living outside protected areas and many classified as vulnerable or endangered. The goal of MENTOR-HAWLT is to develop capacity to plan, implement, and evaluate holistic approaches to reduce wildlife trafficking that include evidence-based interventions designed to address the complex human dimensions of the issue.
