About this opportunity
The National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) seeks applicants for cooperative agreements to advance research on extracellular vesicles and their use as therapeutics in regenerative medicine under the Extracellular Vesicle Therapeutics for Regenerative Medicine (ExTReMe) program; this is a forecast opportunity with no stated application deadline.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, state and county governments, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public or Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. No cost share requirement is stated.
The program supports translation of extracellular vesicle (EV)-based therapeutics, including direct EV therapy using stem cell-isolated EVs produced under GLP conditions and stored as off-the-shelf therapies, and designer EVs personalized to individual patient needs. EVs—such as exosomes and microvesicles—mediate intercellular communication by carrying proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids; they influence cellular behaviors during tissue repair and regeneration and can be engineered to deliver therapeutic agents or modulate signaling pathways involved in repair and regeneration.
Peer review evaluates scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget justification, and relevance to program objectives. Award decisions are forwarded to the NCATS Advisory Council for second-level review. The program operates under Assistance Listing 93.350 with project periods of one to seven years. Grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from annual financial status report submission.
Forecast synopsis
The National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) seeks to advance its mission by advancing research on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their use as therapeutics in the field of regenerative medicine.
The main objective of this program, Extracellular Vesicle Therapeutics for Regenerative Medicine (ExTReMe), is to support the translation of EV-based therapeutics in regenerative medicine. EVs, like exosomes and microvesicles, are crucial mediators of intercellular communication, carrying diverse cargo like proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. In regenerative medicine, EVs play a significant role by influencing cellular behaviors during tissue repair and regeneration. Due to their natural function in intercellular communication, EVs represent a novel, cell-free, therapeutic tool. EVs can be further engineered to deliver therapeutic agents or modulate signaling pathways involved in repair/regeneration.
Areas of interest for ExTReMe could include, but are not limited to:
- direct EV therapy (stem cell-isolated EVs produced under GLP conditions, and stored as off-the-shelf therapies);
- designer EVs (personalized to the individual patient's needs).
