About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute seeks applicants for Exploratory/Developmental Bioengineering Research Grants (EBRG) under the R21 mechanism with an application due date of January 7, 2028; clinical trials are not permitted under this solicitation.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), school districts, and other entities including faith-based and community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities. Non-domestic entities are also eligible.
The program funds engineering-oriented research demonstrating feasibility and potential utility of new capabilities or improvements in quality, speed, efficacy, operability, costs, and accessibility of solutions addressing problems in basic biomedical, pre-clinical, or clinical research, clinical care delivery, or accessibility. Research is performed in the United States and its possessions.
Applications are evaluated on scientific merit and general significance of proposed objectives; technical adequacy of experimental design and approach; competency of the proposed investigator or group; adequacy of available and proposed facilities and resources; necessity of budget components in relation to the proposed project; and relevance and importance to program objectives. Peer review occurs through scientific review groups and the National Cancer Advisory Board. All competitive applications compete for available funds on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities and strategic plans.
This opportunity falls under CFDA numbers 93.394 (Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research), 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research), 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research), 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research), 93.399 (Cancer Control), and 93.396 (Cancer Biology Research).
