About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting the Established Clinician Investigator Award to Support Mentoring (KS1), a grant program that funds established clinician investigators to dedicate sustained protected time to mentoring early-career clinician research scientists. The program is open to a broad range of applicant types, including higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations), faith-based organizations, and eligible federal agencies. Non-domestic entities and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted within otherwise eligible U.S. organizations.

Candidates for the KS1 award must have a clinical degree or equivalent and have initiated postgraduate clinical training. Candidates holding a Ph.D. degree are ineligible. Those who have already served as principal investigators on PHS-supported research projects are ineligible. Award recipients must be able to devote at least 75 percent effort.

The award operates under CFDA 93.113 (Environmental Health), administered by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. This is a nonrenewable award. Applications undergo dual-level peer review: initial scientific merit review by a study section, followed by secondary review and approval by a national advisory council or board. The Director, NIEHS, makes final approval and funding decisions. NIH review and approval processes typically span six to nine months.
