About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) is soliciting applications for shared-use research equipment acquisitions under the Equipment Grants Program (EGP), with applications due June 25, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time. No cost share or matching funds are required; no indirect costs are authorized.
Eligible applicants are accredited colleges and universities, 1862 and 1890 land-grant institutions, state agricultural experiment stations, cooperative extension services, accredited veterinary schools, Hispanic-serving institutions, and eligible insular area institutions. Each eligible institution may submit a maximum of two applications as lead institution and may receive no more than one award per funding cycle. Institutions that received more than two EGP awards in the previous two funding cycles are ineligible.
Approximately $2,800,000 in total funding is available for an anticipated 10 awards, with individual award amounts ranging from $25,000 to $500,000. All awards fund 48-month projects. Funding supports the acquisition of one shared-use piece of special-purpose equipment, including installation costs, equipment warranty (up to $7,000), and one-time equipment use training (up to $7,000). The program explicitly does not fund research project costs, personnel salaries, facility construction or modification, operation or maintenance costs, or general-purpose ancillary equipment.
Applications undergo administrative screening followed by scientific peer review using four equally weighted evaluation criteria (25 points each): innovativeness of proposed approach, potential impact on research capacity, institutional capability, and budget cost-effectiveness. Applications must include a project narrative not exceeding 10 pages, detailed equipment description with justification, description of research activities enabled by the equipment, and equipment cost quotes. No letter of intent is required. The NOFO was modified May 27, 2026; the revised full announcement is the current governing document.
Assistance Listing 10.519.
Synopsis
The Equipment Grants Program (EGP) serves to increase access to shared-use special purpose equipment/instruments for fundamental and applied research for use in the food and agricultural sciences programs at institutions of higher education, including State Cooperative Extension Systems. The program seeks to strengthen the quality and expand the scope of fundamental and applied research at eligible institutions by providing them with opportunities to acquire one shared-use piece of equipment/instrument that supports their research, research training, and extension goals that may be too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NIFA grant programs. The program emphasizes shared-use instrumentation that will enhance the capabilities of researchers, educators, and extension specialists both within and outside the proposing organization.
