Projects must leverage existing NIH research investments and focus on biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research that produces generalizable knowledge applicable to U.S. and LMIC populations, capitalizing on research opportunities not present in the United States.
The program funds intensive mentored research and career development activities designed to enable recipients to become global research leaders at their LMIC institutions, mentor the next generation of investigators, and strengthen international networks supporting NIH research investments.
Proposals undergo initial scientific and technical merit review by a Center for Scientific Review panel, followed by secondary review by the Fogarty International Center Advisory Board. Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives.
