Synopsis
On September 30, 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the first laboratory-confirmed case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States in a patient who had traveled to Dallas, TX from West Africa. CDC and the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection announced on October 8, enhanced Ebola screening at five U.S. airports that receive over 94 percent of travelers from the Ebola-affected nations of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. These five airports are New York’s JFK International Airport, Washington-Dulles, Newark, Chicago-O’Hare, and Atlanta International. Updated CDC guidance, supported by ASPR, urges hospitals to limit the spread of the virus in order to protect and maintain their workforce, to prevent hospitals from being a disease amplifier, and to protect non-Ebola patients from infection. This grant will enable select public health departments serving the regions where enhanced airport screenings are occurring to procure equipment and supplies, train staff, retrofit facilities, and carry out other necessary Ebola-specific preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants are state or city departments of public health serving the five major airports wherein DHS is conducting enhanced airport entrance screenings for Ebola. Eligible applicants include departments of public health in the following jurisdictions: • Chicago • Georgia • Maryland • New Jersey • New York • New York City • Virginia • Washington, DC
